27 Oct 2021 The Ecomapping™-Method: a practical approach to make your lab more sustainable

Dr Kerstin Hermuth-Kleinschmidt

Laboratories use a huge amount of water, energy and other resources. Freezers for example use as much energy as a single-family household. When scientists shared their plastic consumption at the #LabWasteDay, they produced on average 300g - 400g plastic waste per day, which accumulates to 70-100kg each year. On the other side, there seems to be little room for maneuver: methods are established and there’s no alternative for many single-use plastics. But if you look closer into your routines, operations and methods, there are ways to change. The Ecomapping-Method is a way to examine your labs sustainability impact and to find specific measures to improve your sustainability performance.
